The most common way of entering cheats is by pressing a set sequence of buttons on the controller pad, either at a particular menu screen, or whilst playing. The way cheat codes are entered for each game is different, and some games have different types of cheats entered at different menus.
Button Conventions
Button codes make use of all the available buttons however rarely make use of the analogue joysticks on the Playstation 2 controller. Most cheat codes make use of the four buttons on the right-hand side (the symbol buttons) and the D-Pad (the cross-shaped button on the left-hand side of the controller)
When listing button cheats, certain conventions or notations are used to describe which button to press. These are:
- U: Press Up on the D-Pad
- D: Press Down on the D-Pad
- L: Press Left on the D-Pad
- R: Press Right on the D-Pad
- X: Press the X button
- S: Press the Square button
- T: Press the Triangle button
- O: Press the Circle button
- L1: Press the top-left shoulder button (it’s marked with L1 on most Playstation 2 controllers)
- L2: Press the bottom-left shoulder button (it’s marked with L2 on most Playstation 2 controllers)
- L3: Press the left-hand analogue stick Down until it clicks
- R1: Press the top-right shoulder button (it’s marked with R1 on most Playstation 2 controllers)
- R2: Press the bottom-right shoulder button (it’s marked with R2 on most Playstation 2 controllers)
- R3: Press the right-hand analogue stick Down until it clicks
